The Department of Rheumatology specializes in treating autoimmune diseases caused by the abnormalities of the immune system, as well as musculoskeletal diseases that affect the joints and surrounding tissues of the body.
The Department of Rheumatology at KUMC has been newly established, along with the new hospital construction. In 1985, the first research and treatment of patients with rheumatic diseases in Korea was established, with a brief history of 30 years. However, the rheumatic disease treatment is becoming increasingly important with the trend in population aging, significant increase in the prevalence of degenerative arthritis, discovery of new rheumatic diseases, and effective treatment development.
In 2005, we opened the rheumatology clinic by inviting rheumatologists with many clinical experiences and research achievements. In addition to treatments, we carry out extensive clinical and basic research in addition to treatments. We offer the best quality of health care in Korea by reviewing and improving the recent trends in treatment, as well as addressing the cases of patients in each facility, by frequently holding meetings with the medical staff from the leading rheumatology centers in Korea.
The Department of Rheumatology at KUMC offers medical services for different rheumatic diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, senile arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE], ankylosing spondylitis, gouty arthritis, vasculitis, Sjogren's syndrome, and Behcet's disease). In fact, we are introducing new consultation methods, which incorporate general treatments (e.g., drugs and injection therapy) with exercise education, physical therapy, and consultation with the other departments (e.g., ophthalmology, dermatology, orthopedics, rehabilitation medicine, etc.).
An accurate diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases will help the patients recover faster. We are aiming to provide our patients with the best treatment and sincerely treat them as part of the family.
