The Department of Cardiac Anesthesiology is a subspecialty of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. It provides world-class anesthesia management and postoperative pain treatment for patients who underwent cardiac and macrovascular surgeries, which were performed by the Department of Thoracic Surgery at KUMC.

A highly advanced patient monitoring system is applied to every patient in the ICU and inpatient ward in order to maximize the safety and maintain the hemodynamically stable status of the patient. This is performed even with the high level of difficulty and risk of both cardiac and macrovascular surgeries. The latest ultra-short acting anesthetic is easily metabolized in the body in an extremely short period of time with less burden on the heart function. It also prevents delayed recovery resulting from the accumulation of long-term anesthetics in the body, and allows for a relatively fast recovery of the patient accompanied by a short stay in the ICU and inpatient ward. In addition, breaking away from the conventional anesthesia management with focus on the survival of the patients resulted in the patient's early recovery in regard to their eating habits, ambulatory status, and activities of daily living, as well as improvement in the patient's comfort.
